What happened to your Payback or Publisher Repertoire Payment?
Thursday, December 10, 2015
Affiliates receiving this year’s Payback or Publisher Repertoire Payment have likely noticed their payment is lower than what they received last year.
Payments are down primarily due to the education sector’s interpretation of “fair dealing,” which has led Canadian elementary and secondary schools, as well as many universities and colleges, to stop paying royalties for copying that was previously covered under Access Copyright licences.
While copying continues unabated, writers, visual artists and publishers now receive less for the use of their works. Access Copyright takes this challenge seriously and we are working to work towards a more balanced interpretation of “fair dealing” in education.
All creators affiliated with Access Copyright as of December 31, 2014 were eligible to receive a Payback payment this year. Payments were sent out via direct deposit or cheque the week of November 16.
All publishers affiliated with Access Copyright as of December 31, 2014 and who completed a repertoire claim by August 31 will receive this year’s Publisher Repertoire Payment the week of December 14.
