“To be recognized by one’s country...I am overcome with gratitude” was Access Copyright affiliate and author Erna Paris’ reaction upon learning that she had been appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada.
Paris—one of the Canadian creators and publishers who founded Access Copyright in the late 1980s—was among 69 individuals appointed to the Order by Gov. Gen. David Johnston on December 30.
Paris’ work in the fields of literary non-fiction, magazine journalism and radio has focused primarily on issues of human rights and indeed, the citation accompanying her honour by Rideau Hall states, “For her efforts to bring attention to human rights issues as an author and activist.”
Six other AC affiliates were among those recently appointed to the Order of Canada. Access Copyright congratulates:
George Baird, appointed a Member of the Order of Canada “for his contributions to architecture as a scholar, teacher and practitioner.”
Laura Brandon, appointed a Member of the Order of Canada “for her contributions to uncovering and preserving Canadian war art, and for bringing it o the attention of national and international audiences.”
Robert Campbell, appointed a Member of the Order of Canada “for his contributions to academia as an authority on postal services and as president of Mount Allison University.”
Wade Davis, appointed a Member of the Order of Canada “for his efforts to promote conservation and for his work as a writer and scholar.”
Peter Li, appointed a Member of the Order of Canada “for advancing social justice in Canada through his sociological research into race, immigration and multiculturalism.”
Margaret MacMillan, promoted as a Companion of the Order of Canada “for her eminent studies of international relations history, and for her leading contributions to public discourse on history and current affairs.”
