Payback for Writers and Payback for Visual Artists

The royalty payments that affiliates receive from Access Copyright are considered taxable income and are tracked and recorded on a T5 slip.

T5 slips were mailed out to affiliates on February 22.

Find out more information on reporting royalty income on an income tax return or visit the Canada Revenue Agency website.

If you do not receive a T5 slip from Access Copyright by February 28, please email us at

2018 Payback Payment

The 2018 Payback claim period will be open from April 1 to May 31.

All creators affiliated with Access Copyright as of December 31, 2017 will be eligible to submit a claim for this year's payment. Payments are distributed at the end of every November.

The eligible publication years for your 2018 Payback claim will be works published in print format between the years 1997 – 2016. Works published in 2017 will be requested next year. Digital/online works are not eligible.

You will not need to submit a 2018 claim if:

  1. You submitted a claim in the past and do not have any new (2016) works to add. Your 2018 payment will be calculated based on the data submitted previously.
  2. You did not publish any works between the years 1997 – 2016 in print format and for which you retain copyright.

If you haven’t signed the new Creator Affiliation Agreement, you will be first prompted to review and sign the new agreement.

This is the time to stand up and take action.

The federal government has launched a review of the Copyright Act.

This is an important opportunity to call on the government to ensure that balance is restored so that creators will once again be fairly compensated for educational copying of their works.
